My default answer to compatibility questions is to install Fedora Core distros and see what happens. It usually has the most number of drivers for almost anything. If for older laptops, go for Fedora Core 4. Any Linux "flavor" is good for security testing. What's more important for you, I presume, is just to get it running for now. FWIW, we use Fedora Core and Knoppix flavors in our pentests or forensic cases, just for simplicity's sake.
