It seems the problem went away when I upgraded the DSL router's firmware.  I 
guess the problem was with windows scaling as Ed Tongson surmised -- the 
upgrade fixed a windows scaling problem with Vista.

Thanks to Ed for the lead.  It made me read the change logs.
