Why the Move to Web-based Apps?
October 8th, 2007 by Maddog

Over seven (correction: six) years ago, I was in the small city of
Dumaguete in the central Philippines where I conducted a short seminar on
Linux. The sessions were conducted in a small internet cafe and after the
two-day activity, we put the PCs we had used back online at the cafe,
forgetting that we had installed Red Hat 6.0 on them!

The cafe soon opened and I saw a pair of little schoolgirls, both around
ten years old, walk up to a Linux box, and in less than a minute they were
checking e-mail on Yahoo and surfing the Web.

That incident illustrated two things. First, was that the GNOME interface
was quite intuitive. Those girls most likely had no training in Linux
whatsoever since, back then, hardly anyone in the Philippines outside of
geek circles and the IT industry had heard of Linux. These kids probably
didn't even know they were using Linux at all.

Which brings me to the second point. As many have pointed out before, most
users probably don't care about the underlying operating system. What
they do care about, however, is that whatever they are using it simple,
meets their needs, is reliable and secure, and doesn't keep them
waiting. In other words, the system they are using -- whatever it may be
-- has to work and work well.
