Hi:
Sorry if the question is a bit out of topic. Does the
localhost entry in /etc/hosts file affect the way an Oracle
client connects to an Oracle server? (The server is not in
the same machine as client)
There are times I was unable to connect to an oracle
server from a linux machine (Server is not on the same
machine). Most of the error message are in form of
"ORA-12170". I tried setting up the timeout settings but
still it doesn't work. The occurance of the error is so
irregular (or unpredictable). There are times I suspect I
lost connection to the server, but pinging the server
succesfully disproved my theory.
One day I changed the following entry in the
/etc/hosts:
::1 localhost.localdomain localhost
to
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
Since then, the I was able to connect to Oracle
successfully each time. By the way, my colleague also
experienced this error; changing /etc/hosts also fixed his
problem
It was during examing sqlnet.log that leaded me to
suspect that the error has something to do with the
localhost entry in /etc/hosts.
BTW, what does ::1 on the /etc/hosts means? I tried
googling, but to no avial.
The following is my setup:
TNS for Linux: Version 10.2.0.3.0 - Productio
TCP/IP NT Protocol Adapter for Linux: Version 10.2.0.3.0
- Production
Fedora Core 6
Thanks in advance,
ludwig
PS :
1) Are these sort of questions ok under this list? Sorry if
my question is off-topic.
2) Can I email questions related to software development
undex Linux in PLUG? I looked at the OSS-DEV archives but a
lot of entries are not software development related (Plus
the fact that it seems that the list is somewhat inactive)
