Besides xvidcap, you can also try:

byzanz (http://people.freedesktop.org/~company/byzanz) also in debian/ubuntu
and
istanbul

byzanz creates animated GIFs. istanbul on the other hand generates an
Ogg Theora file. xvidcap will produce MPEG or AVI files.
