Took me a week figuring out how to import a pst file, in the end, i did what 
you just did. That was last year, however, I still don't think there's an 
easier solution. But the good news is, you only do this once. 

But maybe you can skip installing Windows and find a friend or relative who 
has one installed, then import it from there.
