IPv4 Depletion: Don't Look Now... February 4th, 2008 by Maddog http://www.infoweapons.com/blog/?p=113
IPv4 addresses are a finite resource. As many have already pointed out, we may be just a few years away from depleting the addresses that are still left. And while there have been a number of strategies that can effectively postpone the day of reckoning, so to speak, that day will come. And as it comes closer, things will have to change way before IPv4 addresses actually do run out. Geoff Huston, Chief Scientist at APNIC, in his September, 2007 APNIC presentation entitled "IPv4 Unallocated Address Space Exhaustion", gave an overview of the depletion situation -- which is approaching a critical stage. He also takes a look at the different strategies designed to cope with the problem, as well as what is probably the best solution, technology-wise: IPv6. One strategy that seems to be gaining ground is the use of Network Address Translation (NAT) to extend the life of the IPv4 address pool. But NATs bring their own problems into the picture. And given the possible future IP-based applications, one has to ask, as Huston does: Can NATs scale?
