Perl is a dirty language for lazy developers. And yes, the OO features
are an ugly tack-on.

That said, it is probably the most powerful language if you're looking
at compactness of code. I spent almost my entire programming career in
Perl, and I still look upon it fondly. It is a lazy hacker's best
friend.

But it's horrible to maintain (as you have discovered!) and the
expressive syntax means IDE's are few and far between (it seems that
Komodo has failed; and the Eclipse plugin is fragile and easily
confused by legitimate code).

Personally I found the Camel book to be very well written... I guess
that says something about my mind-set (it's a mess in there!)
