I read the article through and I couldn't help coming to a reaction. As far as being employed goes, wherever you are, wherever you've been or wherever you're going to will always suck in one way or another. At the end of the day, being an employee can suck per se, especially if as the author indicates, his personal goals are not aligned with what the company is doing.
Apparently there is this perception that working with Google or Microsoft is the end all and be all of being a coder. IMHO it's not necessarily true. I believe that one can be just as happy working for a small ISP, a bank, an NGO, in Academy, etc. In other words, you can be happy and fulfilled working anywhere. As long as your expectations are met, they can put you in the North Pole and you can still be as happy as a clam. Each one of us is built differently. It is important to ask ourselves what makes us 'tick', so as to align your goals with who you are and what makes you happy. This sort of thinking works for programmers, accountants, doctors, lawyers, street vendors, heck everyone.
