Well, I tried doing this too, but it didn't work. In particular, it fails to work with GTK+ apps. A little digging revealed that GTK+ actually keeps its own private, hard-coded table of compose key sequences, which is, IMHO, stupid. I don't want to have to patch GTK+ to do something like this! Using GTK_IM_MODULE=xim makes changes to the Compose file reflect again. However, I don't want to do this either ecause that would also prevent me from using SCIM, which I rely on to input Japanese text.
