Joebert, I don't doubt your reasoning at all. I say "bicycle" because generally (actually with Open Source in general) a lot more work is required to get a certain level of functionality and availability working.
But as you say -- the bicycle gets you there, sometimes later rather than sooner. I cannot bike 100km a week unlike you or my brother -- so for me the bicycle is simply out of the question. Same as many enterprises, they cannot afford long development cycles, or a lot of work to ensure high availability, etc. But as I mentioned in my prior email, if I was starting out building something, I'd probably build it with MySQL (or PostgreSQL) to avoid large up-front costs. It's easy to migrate from MySQL to Oracle if warranted (but the other way around is not so easy..) Although I do not think the feature set of Oracle is bling -- some people need what they need. Things like ensuring HIPAA compliance of the entire database so you can ensure privacy of medical data stored in it: these things cost money to develop and certify. I would not consider that bling, if I needed it. Or for example Transparent Data Encryption and Database Vault, which are required for PCI-DSS compliance.
