On initial capex, yes huge savings.
But my only concern for such infrastructure is that it increases the single-point-of-failure scenario. One computer used by 6 users. Then something happens to that computer. Pow! 6 users down. Plus this setup is ideal if your users require basic computing power for basic office functions (e.g. word processing, excel, web browsing, etc.). Not ideal for power-hungry applications / use such as graphics editing, desktop publishing, 3-D rendering / video editing, etc.. _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rowel Atienza Sent: Sunday, May 31, 2009 9:00 AM To: Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Technical Discussion List Subject: Re: [plug] NComputing Products... is it really a big discount ??Can any linux run on it? Agree. NComputing costs about P4.5k per unit on mass quantity. Diskless atom is roughly P5k. There is a new technology now that supports multiple displays (up to 6). Pretty soon, a diskless Atom could support up to 6 displays. That's thin client for P1k a piece. rowel > I see it as a replacement for LSTP setup, they claim that the virtual > desktop device is cheaper than a normal PC (haven't compared vs a > clone/custom_made PC). > > Anyone have an idea how much cheaper it is and can any Linux distro may run > into it? > > They claim that Ubuntu 8.04 runs stable on it. WinXP works stable too. How much does it cost? We use Intel Atoms. We can get Atom systems at Php 6,000.00/pc (with no hdrive). The added benefit is that we can opt to add a hard drive and we can use it as a stand alone PC. We use PXE booting + Remote X Windows + VIrtual Machines = Thin clients displaying whatever OS the user wants.
