I totally agree on this. When I decided to move to pure Linux environment,
we had to incur indirect cost on skills development, man-hours of research
(which one can replace which M$ servers), trial and error (some admins
prefer different apps for the same purpose, e.g. sendmail vs postfix)
actitivies, and the tag-of-war with the Windows-leaning users.

However, in the long run, it was cheaper. i didn't have to worry on
additional license everytime i add a user; updates are readily available, i
get to use our older machines for dedicated network service. This didn't
happen overnight, it took us around 2 years to stabilize.
