To lessen the damage and the time to recover, you might want to use a
separate /boot partition.  The /boot contains your kernel files and your
initial ram disk.  The initrd image contains a copy of fsck so you can use
it for fs recovery.

Your drive was probably doing a lot of writes when the power was cut off.
