I happen to think that Windows would not have risen from the putrid swamp that was Windows 9x as quick as it did if Linux had not been around, so it was more that commercial software HAD to improve because the free alternative was really starting to offer serious competition. Open source software on the other hand, in my general belief, improves mainly because there are people that care about (and need) a particular piece of software enough to improve it *for free*. Loosely speaking though, of course, competition does spur improvement (and copying). Windows' GUI was always much easier to use than Linux's, so now KDE, GNOME, etc... try to copy Windows GUI to improve Linux's desktop usability vis-a-vis Windows. In fact, the copying is sometimes too close, that I start missing some Unix conventions. Gnome terminal overrides bash's ALT-F for example, and under Mint/Ubuntu's terminals, I really miss auto-copy-on-text-highlight. ================================================================= http://www.webmechs.com/javascript-tutorials/nifty-javascript.php The Nifty Javascript Tutorial _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List http://lists.linux.org.ph/mailman/listinfo/plug Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
