Tried Plone but eventually went the Nuxeo Collaborative Portal Server (CPS) route, when it was still all- Zope application. I think they've moved to the commercial version to Java now but the community edition remains a Zope app. They had a very strong feature set then that wasn't available in other open source apps. The Zope learning curve was steep though.
