Been using using MythTV backend as a PVR + UPnP media server for years. And the machine is a very old headless (no monitor, keyboard) Pentium-III 700 MHz, so no real-time transcoding. The machine is enough to just serve the media files and for recording TV shows (encoding is taken cared of by the Hauppage PVR-350 card that has a built-in MPEG-2 encoder).
