You can use tar for archived backups. 

As for the restoration process, just untar the archive to the appropriate 
directory. For instance, if you have tarred up your / directory, you must untar 
to /.

You can also use dd to create full disk images, but the restoration process 
requires a separate host (ie. a live cd which mounts your local drive) to 
execute dd. Be careful with dd though, as it may cause data loss when not done 
properly.

You can use cron jobs to schedule your backups.
