hi froilan, if you want to get more challenging job... look for a company that can do innovation and doing bleeding edge technology... look for a big and multinational company that promote equal opportunity and no age discrimination... just like my company.. as ive been promoted to principal engineer and transfered to the US last month.. you might be surprise that i have colleagues here in the US ages between around 50 to 70 years old that are still working with a junior and senior engineer role... some have disabilities... as long as you have the qualifications and fit the job.. you are in.... your number of years experience is your main selling point.. big companies are looking for that...
for me.. i hate trainings... i prefer self study... i prefer to buy books than training... those trainors can't give you everything.. books can give you that if you have the right book.. furthermore.. read those RFCs to get every details... you want to get challenge as netadmin? start installing linux as host OS... virtualbox as virtualization software.. linux as guest OS with dynamips and real cisco IOS image as your cisco virtual routers and switches... freebsd as guest OS with JunOS as your Juniper virtual routers... connect them and start playing with OSPF, BGP and MPLS... thats what i did learning those stuff by myself.. the above is just the beginning... we are now entering in the cloud service.... you can setup an entire datacenter with just an automation script inside the cloud service.. no more cablings.. no more heavy physical devices such as routers, loadbalancers, switches, firewalls, servers, etc. to connect them.. just a script and it will create those things for you automatically.... your netadmin and sysadmin skills will stand you out in the cloud service... im planing to give 3 to 5 more years and change career to a non technical one and go back to the philippines to get excited and challenge again with another career... being a corporate slave for so many years is more than enough to prove your worth... im talking here about the difference between having a financial security versus financial freedom... one thing to keep you in challenge always.. dont just practice your art... know its secrets... fooler.
