hi samakv,

it will run but it depends on the applications if it is memory hungry or
not when it comes to decent performance... but applications are memory
hungry nowadays...

all modern operating systems have its own *virtual memory*... its a
combination of physical memory and swap space... the swap space is an
extension of your physical memory for temporary storage... thus the higher
swap space you allocated.. the higher virtual memory you have in your
system...

the virtual memory manager is using paging and swapping...

when an application declare a variable either static or dynamic in data
segment... it is allocated by pages.. normally in linux.. one page is
4kb.. even if you allocated just 1 byte variable.. it will consume 1 page
or 4kb in memory...

paging is where when your active process (running application) needs more
memory (eg. malloc() ) and OS is running out of physical memory.. it will
look for least recently used pages in physical memory (normally coming from
inactive or sleeping process) and move that to swap space...

swapping is where when OS is running out physical memory.. it looks for
inactive or sleeping process and move its entire memory segments (eg. code,
data, stack) to swap space...

with that strategy and even though you have a big virtual memory by
allocating a huge swap space.. your bottle neck is your disk i/o as memory
i/o is N times faster than the disk i/o...

to compensate that bottleneck.. first if you can increase your RAM and
second convert your disk to SSD... SSD is just like a RAM disk..

but of course you need to factor also cpu i/o and network i/o in regards to
performance...

fooler.
