Is that how web servers do it? They start their own players to stream
out video files?

I was hoping there is a video format somewhere that can be displayed
live while it is being downloaded. I thought this was what streaming
video was all about...

By the way, to those who (like me) have been waiting for a good video
editor for Linux, my recent browsing seems to indicate two that stand
out (because they are not crashy). Open Shot for instance is
essentially unusable for me because it crashes too often. The first
8is KDEnlive (v0.9.10 -- v0.9.8 still crashed occasionally
according to one reviewer, but v0.8.10 seems have finally eliminated
the crashes). I used KDEnlive right after I downloaded it (and for the
first time too), and I managed to quickly convert .mp4 to .flv. No
crash too. It's a good start. The second is -- surprise, surprise --
Blender. I tried it a few years back and although it was already stable
even then, couldn't really handle the steep learning curve. But there
are lots of tutorials on youtube. It turns out that Blender also has a
built-in video editor, and it works fine, according to reviewers. (I
haven't tried Blender yet, only KDEnlive).
