Sometimes I like to record video clips, complete with sound. I have a
Philips-based Webcam and a Creative SB X-Fi on 64-bit Ubuntu. The following
does the job:

mencoder tv:// -tv
driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/dsp
-ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o webcam3.avi

VLC, however, is much nicer to use, and I did in fact use it with different
sound hardware in the past. Now, however, when a stream is opened, there is a
loud rushing noise, even if a sound device is not selected. If anyone has
insight into this problem, I would be interested.
