Greetings all,
I'm pretty new to this group, having heard about it through a friend
with whom I connected on LinkedIn. I'd like to thank the list owner for
allowing me to join. I'm not an expert in Linux by any stretch, but we
go way back.
My first taste of Linux was in the 90s when a friend of mine introduced
me to the AT&T 3B1 Unix PC. Having taught myself BASIC and 6502
Assembly, I was eager to start learning C, but I didn't have a
compiler. I could buy one for Windows (3.1 at the time), but then I
discovered SLS Linux.
Those were rocky roads then, and Windows was my primary OS until about
10 years later when I made SuSE my primary. I have never considered
putting Windows back on as primary, but when I bought a new PC it came
with Vista. I gave that a try for six months. It tried to do too many
things and be too much of a nanny. It was taxing to the PC unless I
added RAM. Adding OpenSUSE was easier and less expensive.
I now use Ubuntu Hardy (Intrepid appears to have issues with my
hardware) and I have XP as a guest in VBox. I'm not afraid of trying
other *nixen and sometimes enjoy the challenge, learning how to use
ndiswrapper and other fun tools. And it's childishly fun to show my
daughter (laptop Vista) what I can do with compiz that she can't do with
Aero. I've almost got her converted for that alone; she already uses
OOo, Firefox and T-bird, the rest is fluff.
Thanks for reading,
Larry
