Does your pointy device have two buttons? In xorg.conf do you have "emulate 3-button mouse" in the device section? If the answer to both of these questions is "yes," then all you need do is press both the left and right buttons at the same time to gain the function of the middle button. No need to abuse the wheel. I've not had a wheel on my trackballs, and pressing both buttons simultaneously has always worked to paste selected text in both consoles and GUI apps. Rich -- Richard B.
