At tonight's meeting I was claiming that the blade portion of a DVI connector was used for keying different types of DVI connectors. A subsequent search found no basis for this claim. As someone else mentioned, the blade is the analog ground, and it appears that it is always in the same orientation.
As penance for my misinformation, I offer this link that has lots of good info regarding Over The Air(OTA) HDTV reception and the coming switchover. http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ Regarding the June 12 switchover to digital-only broadcasts, here are the final frequency assignments for the major local stations. It's my understanding that today all of these broadcasters are transmitting their digital signal in the UHF band. On June 12, the stations that have been transmitting an analog signal in the high band VHF range(7-13 -- KGW, OPB, KPTV) will move their digital broadcast from UHF to their original VHF frequency. Note that KATU, KOIN, and KPDX will stay in the UHF band. Thus to receive all the stations, you will need an antenna that covers both high band VHF(rabbit ears) as well as UHF(bowtie). KATU 43 KOIN 40 KGW 8 OPB 10 KPTV 12 KPDX 30 I suspect that at least some HD receivers will need to rescan the bands after the switchover has occurred in order to pick up the frequency change. Here's an example of an antenna specifically designed for the post-switchover era. Note the absence of low band VHF coverage. A big benefit is fewer, smaller elements. I've no experience with it. It's just something I spotted while shopping. http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=HBU22 I suspect everyone will be affected by the HDTV switchover, if only as tech support for others. Thus I decided to post this to the main list. Finally, here's a warning to those who would take their home television viewing a bit too far. http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ISSUES/my_tv.html -- Galen Seitz [email protected] _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
