I am likely to be moving it between XP and Ubuntu, and I have no real 
need for ntfs, so I followed your advice and reformatted the drive as 
fat32. Now it mostly works as expected. The only thing that happens is 
that I get an error message about Windows not writing all of the data. 
Sounds like there needs to be a way to flush a buffer. On the other 
hand, everything I wanted copied, was successfully copied. I'm not sure 
what wasn't. I didn't recognize the path name mentioned (and, sorry, I 
didn't write that one down).

Thanks for the recommendation on fat32.
