You might look at Tiny Core Linux ("tiny frugal linux with extensions"):

http://www.tinycorelinux.com/

It's developed by Robert Shingledecker, formerly of DSL, who left DSL
because he thought it was getting away from its original mission. (And
because of, well, the usual inter-personal things that can happen
whenever one person talks to someone other than himself.)

Quoth the website:

"Our goal is the creation of a nomadic ultra small desktop capable of
booting from cdrom, pendrive, or frugally from a hard drive. The desktop
boots extremely fast and is able to support additional applications and
hardware of the users choice. While Tiny Core always resides in ram,
additional applications extensions can either reside in ram, mounted
from a persistent storage device, or installed into a persistent storage
device."

It sounded like a fascinating and versatile project -- as much a
"meta-distro" as a regular ol' distro -- when I read about it on
DistroWatch a few months ago, but that's as much as I know about it.
