FWIW, looking at the .pdf file with a pager reveals that it is in that format. Regardless, I built and installed gocr. Then I used pdftoppm followed by 'convert' to convert the files to .pgm. Gocr does well enough on the really poor copy it was fed that it will take less time to clean up the ASCII text than to re-key everything. Thanks, Rich -- Richard B.
