It caused the error as suggested, but did not bork X.  The terminal 
window has no prompt and is unresponsive, but could be easily closed.  
CPU loads are minimal.

This is an HP a1700n, AMD 64, Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64.

I also tried on my Latitude D610 with similar results.
