I'm using KDE, but I am going to assume this is the same kind of thing. KDE 
has the option to turn on sharing, but it will be grayed out until the proper 
packages are installed that allow the actual sharing to happen. So, for me on 
Kubuntu, to get the ability to share folders, I need to first install the NFS 
or SMB packages, and then I can share things over the network through the KDE 
interface. 

Hopefully that's what you need to get this going.
