I don't know if other people who use sqlgrey with Postfix
experience problems or not. My sister has a comcast email
address, she can't email me when sqlgrey is on. I try to
email gblencoe at hydrogendiscoveries.com and he can't
email me back. This is even after I white listed the
hydrogendiscoveries.com domain. I suspect that I need
to white list the abac.com domain instead.

What are people choosing to do? I find that grey listing
doesn't stop spam from coming in. I still get quite a bit
of spam. I've even heard that grey listing might make the
problem worse. Grey listing is a totally inclusive barrier
that is easy to get around.

Perhaps a smarter approach is to record any unknown source
that is emailing me and if I don't put that source on a
white list, sqlgrey is applied. Otherwise, sqlgrey is not
applied even if the source is unknown. For repeat offenders
who are sending crap you don't want and retrying, they
should be 5xx'ed or better yet tar pitted.

Currently, I have sqlgrey turned off and commented out in my
main.cf.

One way to clean up email, but the people trying to reach you
won't like it, is to send a response with a link to your web
site where they can authenticate their message. This breaks
the way email works though and for people who are emailing you
for a mailing list, it will be considered extremely rude.

I guess I'm wondering if I need to grey list more aggressively?
I'm thinking, if I don't white list the email source, then every
time that source tries to reach me again the grey listing should
get harsher. So I start out with a 5 minute delay and work my
may up to say a 24 hour delay. I want to be smarter though so
that the three servers serving my domain are synchronised as to
the length of the delay. I'm thinking if you don't wait for the
specified length of time, the delay gets longer.

So in all honesty, does grey listing make the spam problem worse?
Grey listing slows everything down and unfortunately, some legitimate
email sources aren't compatible with delay schemes. With spammers
retrying, grey listing is totally defeated. Will delay tactics, short
of black listing, stop spammers?

Like I said, I don't know what to do with sqlgrey so I have turned it
off.
