Here's the actual text of the tool-tip that pops up when I hover over
the orange triangle with the ! in the middle:

The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network
problems. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then
selecting 'Check'.

Here's what's in the Software Sources window, Third Party Software tab:

[ ] cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.04.1 _Hardy Heron_ - Release i386 (20080702.1)]/
hardy main restricted
[X] http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt hardy main
[ ] http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner
[ ] http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner (Source Code)
[X] http://kheb.homelinux.org/debian unstable main non-free
[X] http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free non-free
[ ] http://packages.medibuntu.org/hard free non-free (Source Code)

Sounds like something is wrong with the "unstable main non-free" source.

I unchecked:

[ ] http://kheb.homelinux.org/debian unstable main non-free

Reload worked without an error, and the triangle icon went away. I
suspect that this isn't really a solution, since now I won't know about
updates to non-free stuff. Googling pointed me to a thread on a forum
where someone said that it may be that the source is off-line
temporarily. The original poster said that it had been three days. So,
maybe there is a problem someone's working on. I'll put something on my
desktop to remind me to try it again later in the week.
