Thanks for the suggestions.  Nothing in BIOS that seemed even distantly
related to the keyboard.  I'm not sure it's X unless it owns the
/dev/console drivers.  Oddly, or maybe not, my xorg.conf doesn't have a
keyboard section.  It's missing a lot, actually, from what I've seen
previously.  I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty.  I suppose I could try a live CD with
not-Ubuntu or do some research into what replaced xorg.conf.  But the
guified keyboard selector has an evdev option as a generic keyboard but it
wasn't selected.
