FWIW: I've been a subscriber to Slackware since I switched to it in 2003.
Whenever a new version is released I eventually get the boxed cd set for a
very reasonable price. I do it because I have no objections to supporting
Pat and the team who keep this distribution up and running.

He's kept this distribution going since he first released it in 1991 and I
have no qualms about his making money from his effort. While Slackware may
not immediately recognize all installed hardware, I don't change hardware
that frequently that this is an issue for me. And, there's plenty of help to
get everything working. It's well back from the bleeding edge so it's more
stable than are hills between the Cascade Mountain crest and the Pacific
Ocean, yet there is a terriffic group who write and support SlackBuild
scripts for a huge range of tools and applications that are not part of the
standard distribution.

We all have diffeent needs and preferences. One of the most powerful,
positive selling points about linux is the plethora of choices. Many
distributions and, usually, many options for applications (e.g., at least 18
different vector drawing programs last time I looked).
