Thanks to the linguistic skills of J**3 in translating the pictograms to English I quickly got the networking running on the new Toshiba Satellite, upgraded the repositories, installed a couple of packages, and went home happy.
The laptop connects to the wireless access point here (now that I know where the initiator hides), has upgraded a bunch of already-installed packages, and I've added some that she needs (e.g., jpilot, acroread). Video and sound work (once aumix is turned on). So, my wife will be happy with her new box and I can once again not have to keep fixing things. At least for a short time. Thanks to John, Wes, and Keith it all came together in an hour there.
