Since no experts have chimed in. I don't know the answer to your question, but I had a hell of a time getting microphone going in Ubuntu last summer with the Intel motherboard integrated sound: here are some links that helped me.

If memory serves one key was finding the right combination of switches on the big "Volume Control".
