My experience with wireless strongly suggests that:

 a) when it works, it works; and

 b) when it doesn't, it doesnt.

This leads to the general advice:

 c) when something works, keep doing that; and

 d) when something doesn't work, try something different.

Only slightly more seriously, I don't have any experience with realtek
and I have had bad luck with the old 200mW 802.11b prism radios (sold
under several labels, mine are senao I think) with recent kernels. I
tend to use Atheros radios these days.

For fixed (i.e. non-laptop) wireless, there are some really good
options these days, mostly from a company called Ubiquity Networks.
Not too expensive, better-than-commodity quality, including some
high-power options.
