Have you disabled "roaming" on the client? Also, you might want to consider what mode you're running, as in b, g, or n. What I've found is that if I'm running mixed on the AP and a client connects in b mode the AP will knock down the speed. Also, if you're running g mode, I've experienced a slower speed connection at the same distance than if I was running in b mode.
