Thanks, Scott - my clean install on different hardware has no problem, 
the "white screen of death" on intel on-board video i ssurprisingly 
common on upgrade installations.

i should have added that the problematic symptoms persist without any 
desktop effects at all, and even in a "failsafe Gnome" login.

Given your experience, i'll probably just bite the bullet and do a clean 
install, especially now that i remembered an old external USB drive in 
my closet that's big enough to back up my home dir with all its 
VirtualBox disk images.....
