On my Debian box, there is a symlink from /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt to /etcX11/rgb.txt. Is it possible this symlink is non-existent or broken? Also, do you know which file xterm reads from? I found a thread where someone had to move the rgb.txt file from /user/share/X11 to /lib/X11 to as that's where xterm was looking for it...
