By the time i had time to try them out, i was able (once again) to connect to all four IM services i use. Between reporting the problem and discovering it miraculously cured, i installed the latest updates (including kernel 2.6.31-17) - i wonder if that had something to do with it. The only difference between my system software on the problem machine and my office machine is that the personal box uses 64-bit Karmic, and the office uses 32-bit. Since my query, i found 1 other user on Ubuntu Forums who had a similar issue. Now i almost wish it would happen again, just to go through the recommended diagnostics....
