Can you post some of your .pinerc settings:

   smtp-server
   inbox-path
   incoming-folders
   folder-collections
   news-collections

My hunch is that your configuration wants direct file access to your 
inbox and/or folders (as opposed to, say, IMAP access to them) and 
pine is trying to launch a remote session to allow it.

Also -- are you still running Pine or have you switched to Alpine? The 
latter is the currently supported version -- and it has UTF-8 support 
so you can read your spam in the original Russian! :-)
