Those who are interested in such applications as Internet telephony will not
want to do without sound input. When the AC97 audio chip was built into most
motherboards, I never thought about it much, for this chip seems to be fully
functional with most OS.

When I obtained a newer computer, the Intel HD onboard audio did not seem to
work with a microphone in Linux. The SB X-Fi add-on card that came with it did
not work at all with Linux until recently, now that Creative has made the
driver's source code available. I still haven't heard from anyone who was able
to get microphone input in Linux with such a card.

The black-and-silver USB "Logitech Desktop Microphone" does work with Linux,
and because it is a USB device it does not need a battery. it's not very
expensive, so I suppose I would recommend it to someone in a situation similar
to mine. By the way, has anyone yet obtained microphone input from one of the
X-Fi cards?
