Depending on how much of a social network experience you are after, you might want to check out buddypress (buddypress.org/) which implements forums and a host of other social features (user profiles, groups, activity stream) on top of wordpress. There are a growing number of plugins for it that might fit the features you need (and most standard wordpress plugins work as well). It also incorporates bbpress, though the amount of actively maintained plugins for that keep lowering and lowering.
