Hey all,

I'm trying to resolve a problem with my keyboard layout options on
Ubuntu 9.10.

The problem is that when I'm at my desk, I plug in an aluminum Mac
keyboard. I prefer to use the Command key as an Alt key because the
placement is the same as on my PC-layout keyboard.

However, this requires that I access the Keyboard GUI menus and do a
bunch of clicking every time I plug this keyboard in.

So, I wrote a script to swap the keys for me. I've had limited
success -- none of the CLI commands seem to work right.

First I tried gconftool. Nothing I set here applied to my session,
though, for some reason.

Next I tried setxkbmap. This worked temporarily - however, Gnome's
keyboard settings were always set, I guess in gconf, and would
eventually override my changes (during a login session).

Finally I tried writing out two .Xmodmap files and swapping between
them depending on the keyboard, but this has proven unreliable.

Annnyway, does anyone have some wisdom on the best way to change my
layout settings with a script? Note that I'm not trying to change
layouts -- Gnome doesn't seem to store settings like Alt and Caps key
swapping on a per layout basis.

Andrew
