Thanks all.  I will try booting from the CD-ROM first (the BIOS is set
to boot from the CD first) -- would've tried that already, except that
I didn't have time this morning.  If that works, then I'll try putting
in a new drive and see if I can get anywhere.

And I'll check out the video, when I get over to the library later.
At the moment, I'm using a computer at an office I sometimes do some
work at.

Sigh ... should be an interesting afternoon/evening.
