The "old Grub" is now "GRUB Legacy" and is no longer being developed. Without passing judgment on the wisdom of abandoning grub 0.9x, I'll say that distros will sooner or later have to (a) go to GRUB 2 or (b) start to maintain the legacy code themselves.
