Some weeks ago I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my test box. The
installation completed and presented me with a login screen. However,
when I typed my password there was a brief delay and then I was back at
the login screen. At that time I found no solution on the Ubuntu
community forum. In order to try out some other things I wiped that
installation by installing Ubuntu 9. Somewhere along the line I was
offered the opportunity to install a number of updates. After completing
those I was offered the opportunity to upgrade to 10.04. Since it is
just my test box, and since I was finished with the other things I
wanted to do at the time, I allowed the process to proceed. It required
a number of hours and a couple of responses, so it wasn't until the next
morning that it was finally ready to present me with a login screen.
After typing my password I heard most of the musical bit that serves to
let me know the sound system is working. I say "most of" because it was
clipped just before finishing, and then I was presented with the login
screen, again!

I checked back with the Ubuntu community forum and found this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1507373&highlight=login+loop

One of the recommended fixes was:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you able to get to a console from the login screen by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F2?

If so, login and try typing 'df -h' to see if you have enough disk space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got plenty of disk space so on to the next recommendation:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would try maybe reconfiguring gdm:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

(followed by)

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That worked. Apparently there is an issue with some video subsystems.
Anyway, now that it works, I'll try installing again from the CD and
running dpkg-reconfigure gdm. If all that works, I'll start really
configuring the box to include all the programs I'm currently using. If
that works then I'll use it as a backup of this machine before upgrading
it from Ubuntu 8.

I suspect this will be a much harder project since I have yet to find a
way to keep track of all the things that I install, and how I installed
them. Also, I've noticed that some programs that were available in
Ubuntu 8 are no longer easily available on either 9 or 10. These are not
critical (Buoh comics reader and some card games) but they are things I
use, and would miss. The other problem is discovering what I've done but
have forgotten about since I don't use it/them very often. Some kind of
install log might be the solution, as long as it isn't too cluttered.
Any advice on this aspect of system administration will be appreciated.
