Quick follow up.  I decided to do an install from source code (the 
tarball) and discovered another missing package -- libtool.  Too bad the 
error from the rpmbuild process (RPM or other process issue) wasn't more 
helpful.  I should have guessed it was somewhere else as the 
${BUILD}/config directory had several broken soft links, i.e. nothing at 
the other end.

Anyway after installing libtool the package builds.

Maybe this will help someone else along the way to enlightenment.  :-)
