Hal, Dell may have been more stupid than was HP, Apple, and the other manufacturers, but they're all capable of such behaviors. This was an industry-wide problem with desktop motherboards 5-7 years ago and doesn't tell us anything about current portables. Toyota has recently had major problems that they tried to hide. There are still many Toyotas driving around here without running into things. (And those that do probably have the nut holding the steering wheel to blame.)
